Cool Tools Patina Gel – Liver of Sulfur Gel for Blackening and Patinating Silver
Cool Tools Patina Gel makes it easy to create beautiful patinas on silver jewellery and other silver objects. Depending on the concentration, temperature and application method, colours can range from gold, purple and blue tones to a deep black finish.
Cool Tools Patina Gel is liver of sulfur in a stabilized gel form. Unlike traditional solid liver of sulfur, the gel is less susceptible to deterioration from light and air, giving it a longer shelf life and making it ready to use whenever needed. The gel is also very economical: just ¼ teaspoon is enough to make approximately 175 ml of a strong patina solution.
Applications
- Blackening silver jewellery
- Creating coloured patinas on silver
- Enhancing textures, relief patterns and engravings
- Controlled spot patination using a brush
Directions for Use
Dissolve a small amount of gel in warm water to create a patina solution. Immerse the piece until the desired colour is achieved.
For coloured patinas, a few drops of ammonia can be added to the diluted solution. By varying the ratio, temperature and exposure time, a wide range of colour effects can be achieved. Since results depend on many factors, it is recommended to experiment on a test piece first.
The gel can also be applied directly to silver with a brush. This allows you to selectively darken specific areas without treating the entire piece. It is ideal for highlighting details and creating additional depth and contrast.
Repeat the process until the desired result is achieved.
Finishing
Would you like to keep only the recessed areas dark? Rinse the piece immediately after patination and gently polish the raised areas with a polishing cloth. This creates a beautiful contrast between darkened and polished surfaces.
After patination, it is recommended to thoroughly rinse the piece and then neutralize it in a solution of water and baking soda. This helps remove any remaining patina solution and prevents unwanted further reaction.
