Art Clay Silver Overlay Paste 15 Gram – For Silver Overlays, Repairs, and Decorative Details


Art Clay Silver Overlay Paste 15 gram is made from 99.9% pure silver, also known as fine silver. This special silver paste has been developed for applying thin silver layers to various surfaces and can be combined with all types of Art Clay Silver.

The Overlay Paste is suitable for non-porous and glazed surfaces such as glass, enamel, ceramics, and porcelain. This makes the paste ideal for decorative applications, silver accents, and creative mixed-media designs.

In addition, the paste is excellent for repairing fired silver and restoring damaged silver pieces that have already been fired. It can also be used for attaching fine silver components, such as fine silver bezel wire, to fired silver.

If desired, the paste can be diluted with distilled water, making it easier to apply thin layers and fine details.

Before use, it is important to stir the paste thoroughly to ensure the silver particles and binders are evenly mixed. This provides smoother application and better results.

After drying, the paste can be fired with a gas torch or in a special kiln. The ideal firing temperature and firing method may vary depending on the surface on which the paste is applied.

Shaping Phase

You can easily apply the overlay paste with a brush or carefully in thin layers onto the desired surface. It is recommended to apply the paste in multiple layers to ensure proper coverage and give your workpiece a smooth finish. Start with a thin layer diluted with distilled water and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying the next layer. Do not apply more than 0.5mm, otherwise the clay may come loose and crack due to shrinkage; if you want thicker lines, fire in two batches.

Drying Phase

The Art Clay Silver Overlay Paste dries naturally, so be mindful of this while working. Ensure your piece is completely dry before applying additional layers. If the paste in the pot has dried out, add a few drops of distilled water and stir it well with a toothpick or other suitable tool. Let the moisture sit for a while before stirring to achieve the right consistency.

Once the paste is completely dry, the piece will have the hardness of plaster, allowing you to continue working, repairing, or joining parts.

Shrinkage and Firing

The overlay paste shrinks by about 9% during firing. This is important to consider, especially when creating detailed designs. Make sure your piece is completely dry, particularly after applying extra layers of paste, to prevent it from distorting during the firing process. The ideal firing temperature is between 800°C and 900°C. The duration of the firing will depend on the heat source used.

Finishing Phase

After firing, the overlay paste will have a crystalline structure and will appear white. For finishing, you can use a polishing brush for a matte finish, or continue polishing with polishing sponges, an agate pen, polishing needle, or sanding discs with a Dremel for a glossy result.
